**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and a touch of fear regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being inherently shy and reserved, immersing myself in this fresh experience felt daunting. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year replete with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxieties of Making Connections

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered at the outset was forging friendships. If you’re a potential student, this might also be a concern for you. On my first day in the student residence, I was so daunted that I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to step out and introduce myself. However, fast-forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever experienced.

Imperial has become like a second home for me, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in light conversation with others in similar situations. The crucial lesson? Take that plunge at the start of the year. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be myriad icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just embrace who you are—Imperial is full of diverse individuals, and you’re sure to meet people who resonate with your interests.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was acclimating to the demanding workload and academic rigor. There was a marked increase from A-levels, and an even sharper rise in difficulty from the first to the second term. It’s easy to feel inundated, especially when you observe others studying and begin to question your own capabilities.

What assisted me in navigating this was coming to the realization that everyone encounters difficulties at some point. If you find something perplexing, it’s likely others do too. The most beneficial thing you can do is to seek help—whether from classmates or academic staff. Learning to ask for assistance is one of the most advantageous skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Staff Support

Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely wish for students to excel and are always willing to engage in discussions regarding any challenges we face. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had tapped into it earlier.

At the start of the year, I took a step forward and became a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster relationships with staff members, which proved to be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My major lesson? Take full advantage of the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In retrospect, this year has shown me that much of the trepidation I felt prior to and during university was largely unwarranted. There exists an abundance of support systems, both from staff and fellow students, to aid you in navigating the challenges ahead. Most importantly, I’ve come to understand that I’m never isolated, and I’ve learned how to juggle academic demands while enjoying my time at Imperial.

For anyone about to embark on their university adventure: take risks, seek assistance, and welcome the experience. You will grow in ways you never anticipated!
