### Thoughts on My Debut Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my initial year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year marked by personal growth, obstacles, and memorable moments, I can appreciate just how much I’ve absorbed and how far I’ve advanced.
#### Conquering the Challenge of Friend-Making
One of the primary obstacles I encountered when starting university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my first day in the student residence, I spent hours in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, I can now proudly state that I’ve made some of the most remarkable friends I could have hoped for.
The essential takeaway I discovered? Make that initial move. It may seem overwhelming, but even brief chats with those in the same position can blossom into lasting friendships. If you’re not immediately prepared, don’t fret—there will be an abundance of icebreaker activities and chances to meet others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to connect with individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
#### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another considerable challenge was becoming accustomed to the academic load and difficulty level. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel inundated or question your capabilities when surrounded by diligent classmates.
What assisted me during this phase? Keeping in mind that I wasn’t on this journey alone. If I found a concept difficult to grasp, there were likely others facing the same struggles. The best action to take in your first year is to reach out for assistance—be it from peers or educators. Seeking help doesn’t signify weakness; it’s a vital aspect of learning and development.
#### The Value of Staff Support
A key component of my journey has been the backing received from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely aim for student success and are consistently receptive to feedback. They recognize the hurdles we encounter and actively endeavor to assist us.
While it took me some time to fully utilize pastoral support, I regret not doing so earlier. Stepping into the role of a well-being representative enabled me to foster connections with staff, which proved invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to engage with faculty members, and doing so can significantly enrich your university life. My main takeaway? Make the most of the available resources—you can never have too much assistance.
#### Concluding Thoughts
Upon reflection, this year has shown me that many of the apprehensions I harbored before commencing university were unfounded. A multitude of support systems exist, spanning from staff to fellow students, available to facilitate the transition. Most crucially, I’ve realized that I am never genuinely alone. Even amidst the stresses of examinations and deadlines, I’ve discovered ways to savor my university experience.
For anyone poised to embark on their university adventure: welcome the challenges, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity. You may find yourself surprised by your own growth.
