**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with nervousness, uncertainty, and anxiety about the journey ahead. I was poised to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been shy and introverted, entering this new phase felt intimidating. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and amazing experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Fear of Friend-making
One of the most significant challenges I encountered early on was the task of forming friendships. If you’re about to become a student, this might also be one of your major worries. On my inaugural day in student accommodations, I was so daunted that I spent the entire day confined to my room, too apprehensive to reach out to others. Nevertheless, fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. Imperial has turned into a second home, and all it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with fellow students in the same situation.
What did I learn from this experience? Take that bold step early. Even if you don’t feel fully prepared, there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, remain true to yourself—Imperial is a melting pot of diverse individuals, and you’re bound to find friends who resonate with you.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was getting used to the heightened workload and complexity of university-level material. The transition from A-levels was substantial, and the leap from the first to the second term was even tougher. It’s natural to feel swamped or question your competencies when you observe others studying diligently. However, one of the most comforting realizations was that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re grappling with a topic, others likely are too.
My best piece of advice? Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or professors, seeking help is vital. Learning to reach out for support was one of the most invaluable skills I acquired in my first year.
### The Significance of Staff Support
A standout feature of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the exceptional backing from the faculty. They genuinely want students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback and conversations regarding any challenges we encounter. Although I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until later in the year, I now wish I had utilized it sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I took the plunge and became a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to form connections with staff members, which turned out to be tremendously helpful. There are countless avenues to engage with faculty, and taking advantage of these opportunities can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the available support—there’s no such thing as too much assistance!
### Closing Thoughts
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve learned that the fears and worries I harbored before commencing university were mostly unwarranted. With the backing of staff and fellow students, I discovered that I was never isolated in my challenges. More significantly, I learned how to manage academic demands while also savoring my university journey.
To anyone poised to begin their adventure at Imperial: embrace the hurdles, seek help when necessary, and above all, relish the experience. It’s an enlightening period, and you’ll emerge from it more resilient than you ever envisioned.
