**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and subdued, immersing myself in this new phase felt daunting. Now, as I look back on an academic year rich with development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I understand how life-changing this experience has been. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. Beginning university can be intimidating, and if you’re a future student reading this, it’s probably one of your main worries too. On my first day at student accommodations, a few days before classes started, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like a second family to me.

How did this transformation unfold? It began with light conversations and connecting with others who were experiencing similar feelings. I learned that taking the initiative at the start of the year is essential. If you’re not entirely comfortable just yet, don’t fret—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, always remain true to yourself. With such a diverse crowd at Imperial, you’re sure to find like-minded individuals who share your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more demanding. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you measure up.

What aided me was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar feelings. If you find something confusing, there’s a good chance others do too. The key lies in seeking assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Support and Community

Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is phenomenal. The instructors and support staff genuinely desire for you to thrive and comprehend the obstacles students encounter. They are approachable, understanding, and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year.

Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until near the year’s end, I regret not doing it earlier. Early in the year, I took a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which enabled me to establish connections with staff members. This experience turned out to be priceless. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My most important takeaway is to leverage the support at your disposal—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

This year has enlightened me to realize that the anxiety I experienced prior to and during the university year was often uncalled for. With the abundant support from both faculty and fellow students, I’ve discovered that I’m never truly solitary. I’ve also learned how to strike a balance between enjoying life and coping with the inevitable pressures of examinations and deadlines.

Upon reflection, I recognize how much I’ve evolved since that apprehensive fresher who was hesitant to leave their room. University is a voyage of self-exploration, and while it presents its challenges, it’s equally filled with opportunities for growth, connection, and cherished memories.
