**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of commencing my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unknown felt overwhelmingly intimidating. Reflecting on this past year, I see a journey marked by personal growth, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences. So, what have I learned from this life-changing year, and where am I today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of entering university was the challenge of forming new friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may share similar concerns. On my initial day in the student housing, I spent hours retreating to my room, too anxious to venture out and meet anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced.
The breakthrough occurred when I compelled myself to engage in casual conversations with fellow students who were similarly apprehensive. Those first discussions blossomed into bonds that feel like a second family. My suggestion? Take that first step early on. Even if you don’t feel ready straight away, don’t fret—there will be an abundance of icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a varied group of individuals at Imperial, you’re certain to encounter others who resonate with your values and interests.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic expectations of university presented another major hurdle. The transition from A-levels to university coursework was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when surrounded by exceptionally driven peers.
What assisted me in managing this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find yourself puzzled by something, it’s likely that others are as well. The trick is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to request help is arguably the most critical skill you can nurture during your first year.
### Cultivating Connections with Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and understand the obstacles we face. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open to resolve any concerns we had.
Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral guidance available until later in the year, I wish I had done so sooner. Accepting the role of well-being representative for my year was a leap for me, but it ultimately proved to be a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to establish relationships with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university journey. My biggest insight? Utilize the support system available to you—you can never receive too much assistance!
### Takeaways from the Experience
This year has shown me that the anxiety I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. With abundant support from both faculty and fellow students, I learned that I was never genuinely alone. Furthermore, I figured out how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines while also enjoying moments of happiness and fun.
Reflecting on my journey, I can see how much I’ve developed since that anxious fresher who hid away in their room. University has been a path of self-exploration, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead as I progress in my studies.
