**Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been introverted and reserved, plunging into the unfamiliar was not something I was used to. Reflecting now, I see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what precisely did this year impart to me, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered at the beginning of university was the task of forming friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to step outside and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced.
The turning point emerged when I began engaging in casual conversations with others who were experiencing similar feelings. Over time, I discovered a second family here at Imperial, both within my program and throughout the university. The crucial lesson I learned? Be brave enough to take that first step at the beginning of the year. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with fellow students. And most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals at university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the jump from the first to the second term felt even more significant. Maintaining confidence wasn’t easy, particularly when I saw others studying diligently and felt I was falling short.
What aided me through this transition was the reassurance that everyone is facing similar struggles. If something isn’t clear to you, chances are others are grappling with it as well. The most vital lesson I learned in my first year was to seek assistance. Whether from classmates or teaching staff, don’t hesitate to ask for help.
### Support from the Materials Science Department
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is outstanding. The instructors and support staff genuinely care about student success and understand the obstacles we encounter. They maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year to address any worries.
Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had embraced it earlier. One of the proactive steps I took was becoming a year wellbeing representative. This role allowed me to cultivate relationships with staff, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with the faculty, and I highly recommend making the most of these opportunities. My greatest insight? Take full advantage of the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Looking back on the past year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I experienced before starting university, as well as throughout the year, was frequently unfounded. With the variety of support options from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year taught me to balance exam stress and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and laughter.
So, to anyone on the brink of starting their university experience: welcome the challenges, take those leaps of faith, and remember that support is always within your reach.
