**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unfamiliar was a frightening thought. Now, as I reflect on a year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment, I can look back at the lessons learned and the progress made.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered at the onset of university was forging friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely this is one of your major concerns as well. On my initial day in student housing, just a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced.

The secret was taking gradual steps—starting with light-hearted conversations with others who were equally uneasy. Over time, I discovered a second family here at Imperial, both within my course and throughout the university. The biggest lesson I gained? Make the effort early. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others. And above all, remain authentic. With such a varied community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the jump from the first term to the second was even more striking. It’s easy to feel swamped and question your capabilities when observing peers studying and apparently thriving.

What aided me most was reminding myself that everyone is navigating the same difficulties. If you’re having a tough time grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or teaching staff. In my view, learning to ask for help is the most critical skill to acquire in your first year.

### Encouragement from the Materials Department
Speaking of faculty, I cannot stress enough how supportive the Materials department is. The lecturers and staff genuinely desire for students to thrive and are well aware of the obstacles we encounter. They keep lines of communication open with us throughout the year and are always eager to assist.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the end of the year, and I regret not doing this earlier. Early on, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, which helped me forge connections with staff members. This proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are many avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university journey. My most significant insight? Utilize the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I experienced—before starting university and during the academic year—was often unfounded. With the extensive array of support options provided by staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve discovered how to manage stress from exams and deadlines while still carving out moments of enjoyment and fun.

In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a life-changing experience. It’s been a path of personal development, learning to face challenges, and finding happiness in the journey. If you’re on the cusp of beginning your own university adventure, understand that while it may seem overwhelming at first, a world of support and opportunity awaits you.
