**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has consistently been introverted and withdrawn, diving into the experience was a formidable challenge. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what has this year imparted, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the onset of university was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days before the term kicked off, I spent an entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to the present, and I proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both in my program and within the wider university community. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small dialogues with individuals who shared my circumstances.

What did I glean from this? First, it’s worthwhile to take that bold step at the beginning of the year, even if it feels intimidating. If you’re not quite ready, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances created to facilitate connections with others. Secondly, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another crucial challenge was adapting to the workload and the escalated difficulty of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the move from the first term to the second term felt particularly demanding. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing others studying and thriving.

What aided me during this period was the awareness that everyone experiences similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a topic, it’s highly likely that others are too. The essential approach is to seek assistance—whether it’s from fellow students or teaching staff. Developing the ability to ask for help is arguably the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year.

### The Helpful Faculty

On the subject of support, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and are understanding of the challenges students encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and offering direction.

Though I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the proactive decisions I made early on. This role enabled me to foster relationships with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My advice? Utilize the resources available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

In reflecting on this year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I felt prior to and throughout university was frequently unwarranted. There is a wealth of support available, both from staff and peers, to guide you through any predicaments.

This year has revealed to me that I am never genuinely alone, and it has taught me how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and enjoyment.

To anyone preparing to embark on their university adventure: take the plunge, welcome the challenges, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You will grow far beyond what you ever imagined.
