**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about the path ahead. I was on the brink of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted, venturing into the unfamiliar was not a comfortable experience for me. Now, looking back on my first academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyable moments. But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was the process of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might have similar concerns. On my first day in student housing, just a few days before the term officially commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, far too anxious to step outside and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can state with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known.
At Imperial, I discovered a second family—friends who have made this experience genuinely memorable. All it took was a few casual conversations with others who were in the same situation as I was. The most significant lesson I gleaned? Jump in early. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be an abundance of icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Above all, be true to yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you are sure to find others who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating Academic Challenges
Adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material was another considerable hurdle. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and moving from the first term to the second seemed even more daunting. It’s easy to feel inundated or to question your strengths, particularly when you observe others studying and assume they have everything under control.
What aided me during this time was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar difficulties. If you are struggling with something, it’s likely that others feel the same way. The key lies in seeking assistance—be it from classmates or faculty. This might be the most crucial skill you can cultivate during your first year.
### Assistance from the Faculty
When it comes to faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and tutors sincerely want to help you succeed and are fully aware of the challenges that students encounter. They are understanding and keep lines of communication open throughout the year to address any issues that arise.
Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, I regret not doing so sooner. One of the bold steps I took at the start of the year was to become a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to connect with your lecturers and tutors, and doing so can substantially enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I realize that much of the anxiety I encountered—both before and throughout my time at university—was often unwarranted. There is a multitude of support available, from both faculty and fellow students, to help you navigate various challenges. I’ve come to understand that I am never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and pleasure.
Looking ahead, I am eager to see what the next phase of my university experience has in store. For those about to embark on their own journey at Imperial or elsewhere: take the plunge, embrace the challenges, and remember to savor the experience.
