Upon your arrival in London as an international student, it quickly becomes apparent how quickly costs can add up, from accommodation and food to transportation and tuition fees. The next realization involves the unique professional environment, where work, communication, and creativity are viewed differently than in your home country.
For me, part-time employment served as a link between these two worlds, assisting me in managing expenses and grasping the UK market, particularly in the areas of marketing and customer experience. My initial and favorite position was as a MORA Content Creator within Imperial’s central marketing department. It felt surreal to receive payment for creating content for a prestigious university, positively shaping my entire year.

Contributing to the team and producing content that reached over 700,000 people on Imperial’s social media was a dream come true. It encompassed storytelling and sharing student experiences, learning about institutional communication, and comprehending the tone and authenticity that resonate with various audiences.
This position presented unexpected chances, such as interviewing notable figures like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. These experiences would not have been possible had I not embraced that initial opportunity. The MORA team is supportive, nurturing, and encourages creative exploration. If you have a passion for storytelling and want to dive into engaging content projects, this stands out as one of the top part-time positions at Imperial.
**Finding part-time opportunities**
Many avenues exist to secure part-time work while studying at Imperial. I discovered mine through Imperial’s internal job platforms on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs during Welcome Week. Customize your CV for the specific role you’re targeting and display enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can assist with your CV, mock interviews, and job searches. Keep in mind that employers look for dependability, initiative, and friendliness, not solely experience.
**Balancing work and study**
Managing work alongside classes calls for careful planning. I selected shifts only during lighter class schedules. Your studies should take precedence, but a thoughtfully chosen part-time job can enhance your educational experience. My marketing studies felt more significant when I witnessed those concepts applied in actual jobs.
**Exploring different part-time jobs**
During my Master’s program, I engaged in various positions such as server, event coordinator, barista, and bartender. Each job imparted something unique. Work in hospitality taught me genuine customer service, patience, teamwork, and handling pressure with composure. These insights and skills have stayed with me beyond my time at the café.
**Financial independence and visa rules**
From a financial perspective, part-time jobs were essential. I was able to cover rent, travel, and living costs, and even save a little. As an international student, I was permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during breaks, balancing earnings with relaxation.

Reflecting on my part-time experience at Imperial, it entailed more than merely making money.
