When you touch down in London as an overseas student, the initial observation is how swiftly costs can pile up, from accommodation and food to transportation and tuition fees. The subsequent realization is the unique professional culture, where work, communication, and creativity are viewed quite differently compared to your home country.
For me, part-time positions served as a link between these two realms. They enabled me to handle my finances and gain insights into the UK market, particularly from the standpoint of marketing and customer experience. My first and most cherished job was as a MORA Content Creator with Imperial’s central marketing team. It was astonishing to be compensated for producing content for a prestigious university, and the experience greatly enriched my year.

Being part of the team and generating content for over 700,000 viewers on Imperial’s social media platforms made working with the MORA team a fantasy come true. It wasn’t solely about filming or writing – it was about weaving narratives, sharing the student journey, mastering institutional communication, and grasping the tone and authenticity that appeal to various audiences.
In this position, I encountered opportunities I never anticipated, such as interviewing notable figures like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. This experience wouldn’t have materialized if I hadn’t embraced that initial small opportunity. The MORA team is supportive, motivating, and provides a creative environment for experimentation. There are numerous avenues to discover part-time employment while studying at Imperial. I secured mine through Imperial’s internal job boards on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs throughout Welcome Week. The crucial aspect is to customize your CV for the position you’re applying for and demonstrate enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can assist with your CV, interview practice, and job hunting. Keep in mind, most part-time employers prioritize reliability, proactivity, and friendliness over mere experience.
**Balancing work and study**
Balancing work with classes necessitates careful planning. I accepted shifts only when my class load was lighter. Your degree should be your primary focus, but a well-suited part-time position can enhance your studies. My marketing courses felt more significant when I could relate those concepts to real-world employment.
**Exploring different part-time jobs**
During my Master’s, I experimented with various jobs such as waiter, event manager, barista, and bartender. Each job imparted unique lessons. My hospitality experience taught me genuine customer service, patience, teamwork, and remaining calm under pressure. These insights have remained with me beyond the café environment.
