Stepping foot in London for the very first time was a lot to handle. The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I was uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, have no fear. Here’s some guidance to assist you in settling into London before your time at Imperial begins, ensuring you savor your new urban life.
Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just on the brink of term commencement, here’s the wisdom I wish I had received when I first landed.
First and foremost: secure accommodation
Steer clear of expensive hotel stays by organizing your housing in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone shares the same fate, as the best options vanish quickly. Strive for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early classes.
Administrative essentials: taking care of the basics
Once you’re in London, tackle these fundamental matters without delay:
- Money transfers – as an international student, discover a dependable and cost-effective solution to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – obtain one promptly for data access and navigation in your new locale.
- Bank account – some banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are expedient and tailored for students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job earnings.
- Student ID card – vital for entering campus buildings, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Retrieve it as soon as practicable.
The initial week at Imperial is vital
Your first week at Imperial is pivotal for your student experience. Get to know your flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and organizations, and engage in activities that captivate you.
Even if you tend to be reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I did, and forged some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society booths. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university adventure.
Navigating London: travel wisely
During my initial week, I struggled with the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more economical Tube and bus fares.
Walking remains an excellent method to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Discover your comfort zones
London can feel emotionally overwhelming, especially at first. Having a go-to spot is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I retreat daily to unwind. Another is the O2, just a 10-minute walk away, where I relax weekly by enjoying a movie.
Identify your own places, such as a café, bookstore, or riverside seat, to rest and recharge.
And remember to venture out!
Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your go-to dining or coffee venues.
Explore notable landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the experience. Stroll without a specific plan; some of your fondest memories will arise from getting a bit lost!
Last tips before you launch into Imperial student life
- Grab a reusable bag – supermarkets and stores frequently impose charges for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas won’t shield you when the wind picks up.
- Embrace quirky events – they often yield the best stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – everyone feels that way initially.
You don’t need to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and start your London narrative one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
