Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to handle. The city felt enormous, noisy, and fast-moving. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt adrift. If you find yourself in a similar position, there’s no need to panic. Here’s how to acclimatize to London before starting at Imperial, ensuring you make the most of the experience.
Whether you come weeks in advance or right before classes start, here’s the guidance I wish I’d received.
Locate Housing
Arrange your accommodation early to prevent pricey hotel costs. I was lucky, but not everyone enjoys that. Opt for a location close to your campus or along a dependable Tube line to minimize travel times for morning lectures.
Life Admin: Must-Dos
As soon as you arrive, focus on these essential tasks:
- Money transfers – International students require budget-friendly methods for transferring funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide appealing rates.
- UK SIM card – Obtain one right away for data usage and navigation.
- Bank account – Digital platforms like Monzo or Starling are efficient and geared towards students. Open an account for transactions and part-time job deposits.
- Student ID card – Crucial for accessing campus facilities, library usage, and receiving student discounts. Make sure to collect it without delay.
Your Initial Week at Imperial
Your first week is vital for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 clubs and societies. Even if you’re on the shy side, aim to get involved. I established strong friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. This week plays a key role in shaping your university experience.
Getting Around London: Travel Wisely
At first, I struggled with the Tube and bus systems, resulting in a nine-kilometer trek across London. Sidestep my error by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel options. However, walking remains an excellent way to uncover hidden treasures.
Identify Your Relaxation Spots
London can be quite intense. Identify a comforting place, like a park, café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to take a break and recharge. My go-to spots are a nearby park and the O2, where I relax weekly.

Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and home. Find supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite dining spots. Tour iconic landmarks, enjoy free museums, and experience a double-decker bus ride. Some of your fondest memories will spring from unplanned explorations.
Essential Advice Before Starting at Imperial
- Use a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use options.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket since umbrellas don’t hold up well in windy weather.
- Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.
- Don’t be concerned if you feel a bit lost at first; it’s completely normal.
You don’t have to have everything sorted out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already further along than I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus journey and Tesco visit at a time.
