Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, fret not. Here’s how to acclimate to London prior to your commencement at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new urban life.
Regardless of whether you arrive several weeks early or just prior to the term, here are the insights I wish I had received upon my arrival.
Secure Accommodation
Prevent pricey hotel bills by arranging accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone has the same experience. The finest options disappear quickly, so aim to find a place close to your campus or along a dependable Tube line to avoid extensive travel for morning classes.
Crucial Life Administration
Once you land in London, tackle these essential tasks promptly:
- Money transfers – International students require an economical method for transferring money. Applications such as Wise or Revolut provide competitive rates.
- UK SIM card – Data is vital for navigation. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after you arrive.
- Bank account – Some banks may need a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling make it quick and student-friendly. Open an account for transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – This allows access to campus buildings, the library, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.
The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial
Your initial week at Imperial is of utmost importance. It’s the time you will meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and enlist in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you tend to be reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I forged lasting friendships during campus tours and society events. This week establishes the foundation for your university journey.
Smart Travel in London
At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses and ended up trekking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but chaotic. Obtain a Student Oyster card and request the 18+ discount for affordable Tube and bus fares.
Walking is also a fantastic way to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London can sometimes be an emotional whirlwind. Having a comforting place is beneficial. For me, it’s a nearby park where I unwind. The O2, just a short ten-minute walk away, is another go-to for movies and relaxation.
Discover your own comforting places, whether it’s a café, a bookstore, or a bench by the river. These areas provide essential opportunities for rest and rejuvenation.
Discover the City
Get acquainted with the surroundings of your campus and residence. Identify your local supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee locations.
Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and wander without a set plan. Some of your fondest memories will arise from slightly losing your way.
Final Suggestions for Starting at Imperial
- Bring a reusable bag – Stores usually charge for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas struggle against strong winds.
- Participate in unique events – They offer memorable stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – It’s perfectly normal at the beginning.
