Stepping into London was a whirlwind; the city seemed vast, noisy, and rapid. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re facing a similar dilemma, don’t fret. Here’s how to set up your fresh life in London before beginning at Imperial, ensuring you can savor the city.

Whether you’re arriving early or just in time for the term, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure Accommodation

Prevent high hotel costs by organizing your lodging in advance. I was fortunate, but not everyone has that luck. Select a residence close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to sidestep lengthy commutes.

Important Life Administration

Address these essentials promptly upon your arrival:

  • Money transfers – Utilize apps like Wise or Revolut for economical international transfers.
  • UK SIM card – Acquire one right away for data and navigation.
  • Bank account – Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly.
  • Student ID card – Crucial for accessing campus, library services, and obtaining discounts.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is vital. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and prospective friends. Participate in Welcome Week and investigate over 350 clubs and societies.

Getting Around London: Smart Travel

Avoid walking everywhere as I did. Obtain a Student Oyster card for reduced Tube and bus fares. Walking is excellent for finding undiscovered treasures.

Identify Your Relaxation Spots

London can be intense. Locate a comforting spot, like a park or café, to unwind and recharge.

Go Exploring!

Get to know your neighborhood, supermarkets, pharmacies, and favorite spots. Visit landmarks, museums, and enjoy impromptu adventures.

Additional Advice

  • Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket for stormy days.
  • Participate in unique events for memorable stories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s completely normal.

You don’t have to have everything sorted out straight away. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead. Take a moment to breathe, get your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure.
