Stepping into London for the first time was quite an experience. The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling with activity. With nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt lost on where to start. If you happen to be in a similar predicament, there’s no need to panic. Here’s some guidance to assist you in adapting to your new life in London prior to commencing at Imperial, helping you to savor the fresh experience in this vibrant city.
Whether you’re arriving a few weeks in advance or right before term kicks off, here’s the counsel I wish someone had shared with me upon my initial arrival.
First things first: secure your accommodation
Book your housing early to sidestep pricey hotel fees. I was lucky, but others may not be, as the prime choices get snatched up fast. Seek accommodation that is either close to your campus or near a reliable Tube line to minimize long commutes for early classes.
Administrative necessities: organizing the essentials
Upon arriving in London, tackle these essentials without delay:
- Money transfers – as an international student, find a dependable and cost-effective method to send funds from your home country. Apps such as Wise or Revolut can help you avoid unfavorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – having data is essential for navigating a new city. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan as soon as you can.
- Setting up a bank account – while some banks may ask for a UK address, digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Open an account for your everyday transactions and any part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – this is vital for entering campus buildings, libraries, and accessing student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.
The initial week at Imperial is paramount
Your first week at Imperial is critical for your student experience. It’s an ideal time to meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Engage in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and enroll in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you’re on the shy side, challenge yourself to get involved. I did and forged some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society sign-up events. Your first week will establish the tone for your university adventure.
Getting around London: travel wisely
During my initial week, I struggled with navigating the Tube or buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was an unforgettable yet chaotic experience. Make sure to get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel on the Tube and buses at a lower cost.
Walking remains an excellent way to soak in the city’s atmosphere and uncover hidden treasures.
Discover your comfort zones
London can be emotionally taxing initially. Having a favorite spot can be comforting – for me, it’s the park close to my home, where I visit daily to unwind. Another is the O2, just a 10-minute trip away, where I watch films weekly to relax.
Identify your own comforting locations, whether they be a café, bookstore, or bench by the river. These spaces can offer the relaxation and mental reset you need.
Don’t forget to explore!
Acquaint yourself with the area around your campus and residence. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.
Check out famous sights, explore free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus, and wander aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from moments spent getting a little lost!
Final pointers before you dive into Imperial student life
- Acquire a reusable bag – stores typically charge for single-use plastic bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can’t withstand strong winds.
- Participate in unique events – they create wonderful stories.
- Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s perfectly normal at the beginning.
