If you find yourself in a similar scenario, have no fear. Here’s my guidance to assist you in acclimating to London prior to commencing at Imperial, ensuring you relish your new urban lifestyle.
Regardless of whether you arrive weeks ahead or just prior to the semester, here’s the advice I wish someone had given to me.

Steer clear of pricey hotel accommodations by arranging your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the top choices are snatched up quickly. Strive to live close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes to early classes.
Essential Life Tasks
Upon your arrival in London, focus on these key tasks:
- Money Transfers – As an international student, find a trusted method to transfer funds from home. Applications such as Wise or Revolut provide better currency exchange rates.
- UK SIM Card – Acquire a UK SIM card for data and navigation in your new locale.
- Bank Account – Set up a bank account swiftly for everyday transactions and part-time job payments. Digital banks like Monzo or Starling cater well to students.
- Student ID Card – Secure your student ID for access to campus amenities, libraries, and discounts.
The Crucial First Week at Imperial
Your first week at Imperial is pivotal for your student experience. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Get involved in Welcome Week to discover over 350 clubs and societies and join activities that pique your interest.
Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to take part. I forged strong friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. Your inaugural week lays the groundwork for your university adventure.
Travel Wisely in London
At first, I struggled with the Tube or buses and ended up traversing nine kilometers on foot across London. Prevent this by procuring your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more economical travel.
Walking remains an excellent way to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Discover Your Comfort Zones
London can feel overwhelming. Discover a comfort zone such as a park, café, or bookstore where you can unwind and recharge. My personal havens are a local park and the O2, where I de-stress weekly.
Discover the City
Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred dining spots.
Tour iconic landmarks, visit museums, and soak in the city’s visuals. Some of your fondest moments will stem from spontaneous excursions.
Final Suggestions for Starting at Imperial
- Utilize a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket for windy, rainy weather.
- Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.
- Don’t be concerned if you initially feel disoriented; it’s completely normal.
