Stepping into London for the first time was quite daunting because of its size and speed. Armed with merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, don’t fret. Here’s how to get your life in London in order before you start at Imperial, allowing you to appreciate the city.
Whether you arrive early or right before the term starts, here’s the advice I wish I had received.
Secure accommodation
Avoid pricey hotels by arranging housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but options disappear quickly. Seek a location close to campus or a dependable Tube line to sidestep lengthy commutes.
Crucial life tasks
Upon arriving, focus on these essentials:
- Money transfers – Utilize apps like Wise or Revolut for cost-effective international money transfers.
- UK SIM card – Acquire one right away for data access and navigation.
- Bank account – Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and friendly to students.
- Student ID card – Vital for campus access, library usage, and discounts.
Initial week at Imperial
Your first week is key for connecting with fellow students and checking out clubs and societies. Participate in Welcome Week to establish the foundation for your university journey.
Getting around London
At first, I walked nine kilometers due to being lost with public transport. Obtain a Student Oyster card for reduced fares. Walking remains an excellent way to uncover hidden treasures.
Identify your go-to spots
London can feel intense. Discover a comforting place, like a park or café, to unwind and recharge.
Discover the city
Get acquainted with local grocery stores, pharmacies, and your beloved spots. Explore landmarks, museums, and indulge in spontaneous adventures for unforgettable memories.
Additional advice
- Carry a reusable bag to sidestep extra charges.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket.
- Attend unique events for fascinating stories.
- Don’t stress about feeling disoriented; it’s completely normal.
