If you’re feeling the same, there’s no need to panic. Here’s how to transition into London before your journey begins at Imperial, allowing you to savor your new life in the city.
Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or right before the semester starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Prevent costly hotel bills by arranging your accommodation ahead of time. I got lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. Seek a place that’s conveniently located near your campus or a dependable Tube line to skip lengthy commutes to morning lectures.
Address Essential Life Admin Tasks
Once you’re in London, promptly tackle the following necessities:
- Money Transfers – As an international student, explore affordable methods to move money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide competitive rates.
- UK SIM Card – Acquire one right away for data access and guidance in a new city.
- Bank Account – Some banks ask for a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling make it easy and cater to students. Establish an account for everyday spending and part-time job payments.
- Student ID Card – This is vital for gaining access to campus buildings, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Collect it without delay.
The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial
Your initial week is crucial for your student experience. Meet roommates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies.
Even if you are reserved, make an effort to join in. I forged close friendships during campus tours and at society booths. Your first week lays the groundwork for your time at university.
Smart Travel in London
At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometre trek across London. To prevent this, obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel.
Walking remains an excellent way to navigate the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Discover Your Comfort Zones
London can feel overwhelming. Find a favorite spot, like a local park or the O2 for movies, to take a break and recharge.
Identify your own spaces, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or a riverside bench, to relax and enjoy the city.
Explore the City
Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to food or coffee places.
Visit iconic landmarks, free museums, and take full advantage of the city. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from unplanned outings.
Final Advice for Starting at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket since umbrellas aren’t always practical in the wind.
- Join unique events for unforgettable experiences.
