Stepping into London for the first time was quite the experience. The city appeared vast, noisy, and energetic. With just a suitcase and Google Maps, I wasn’t sure where to start. If you find yourself in a similar boat, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to your new life in London before commencing your studies at Imperial, allowing you to fully appreciate the adventure of being new in the city.
Whether you arrive a few weeks ahead of time or just before classes commence, here’s the advice I wish I had known when I first showed up.
Secure Your Accommodation
To avoid pricey hotel fees, organize your housing in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone, as the best options go fast. Try to find a residence close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy travels for early morning lectures.
Administrative Essentials to Address
Once you’re in London, tackle these important tasks promptly:
- Money Transfers – As an international student, discover a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut can help you sidestep unfavorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM Card – Quickly obtain a UK SIM card with data to avoid getting lost without navigation in a new environment.
- Bank Account – While some banks require a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and friendly to students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job salaries.
- Student ID Card – This card allows access to campus facilities, the library, and student discounts. Collect it as soon as you can.
The Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial
Your opening week at Imperial is vital. It’s the time when you’ll meet flatmates, peers, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to take part. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during spontaneous campus tours and club stalls. Your initial week establishes the foundation for your university experience.
Smart Travel in London
In my first week, I struggled with the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers throughout London. It was unforgettable yet hectic. Make sure to get a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel on the Tube and buses at a lower cost.
Walking remains a wonderful way to discover the city and find hidden treasures.
Discover Your Favorite Spots
London can be a lot to handle emotionally. Having a comforting location is beneficial. For me, it’s the park near my home, which I visit daily to unwind. Another comforting place is the O2, a mere 10 minutes away, where I catch movies each week.
Identify your own favorite spots, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, where you can relax and recharge.
Wander the City
Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods close to your campus and residence. Identify your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferred eateries or coffee shops.
Visit iconic sites, check out free museums, ride a classic red double-decker bus, and meander without a set plan. Some of your fondest memories will arise from getting a little lost!
Final Advice Before Starting at Imperial
- Utilize a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket, since umbrellas aren’t practical in windy conditions.
- Participate in unique events for great stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s perfectly normal initially.
You don’t have to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was at the start of my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one bus ride and grocery trip at a time.
