If you happen to be in a similar boat, don’t fret. Here’s my guidance to assist you in acclimating to London before commencing your journey at Imperial, allowing you to relish the city.

Steer clear of expensive hotel stays by securing your living arrangements ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is. The prime options vanish quickly! Strive for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy journeys for early lectures.

- Money Transfers – As an international student, seek an efficient, cost-effective method to send money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.
- UK SIM Card – Ensure you have internet access for navigation. Obtain a UK SIM card and data package soon after landing.
- Bank Account – Some banks ask for a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and favorable for students. Open an account for daily spending and part-time job deposits.
- Student ID Card – This provides access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it at the earliest opportunity.
The Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial
Your first week at Imperial is vital. It’s the time to connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to dive into over 350 student-led groups and societies. Even if you feel reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I made lasting friendships during campus tours and society booths. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.
Getting Around London: Travel Wisely
In my first week, I was confused by the Tube and buses and ended up trekking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but chaotic. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for economical travel. Walking remains a fantastic way to explore and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London can be a bit much emotionally. Having a comforting location is beneficial – mine is a nearby park. I frequent it daily to unwind. My secondary spot is the O2, only 10 minutes away, where I enjoy a movie weekly. Discover your own comforting places, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to recharge and relax.
Discover the City
Familiarize yourself with the surroundings near your campus and home. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee spots. Tour popular landmarks, check out free museums, and take a ride on a double-decker bus for the scenery. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from wandering a bit off the beaten path!
