Arriving in London for the first time felt overwhelming. The city appeared enormous, noisy, and bustling. Equipped with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to start. If you are on the verge of undertaking a similar adventure, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to London life prior to your commencement at Imperial, allowing you to fully embrace your new urban experience.
Regardless of whether you arrive weeks early or just before the semester begins, here’s the advice I wish I had received upon my entry.
First and foremost: secure accommodation
Prevent the hefty expenses of hotel accommodations by arranging a place to live in advance. I was lucky, but many are not, as the top choices disappear swiftly. Strive to reside close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to evade lengthy commutes to early lectures.
Administrative essentials: handling the basics
Once you land in London, promptly tackle these essential tasks:
- Money transfers – International students require an affordable method for transferring funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – Data is essential for navigation. Acquire a UK SIM card and a data plan shortly after your arrival.
- Bank account – Some banks need a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling offer quick and student-friendly options. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – This is vital for utilizing campus facilities, libraries, and attaining student discounts. Secure it as soon as you can.
The initial week at Imperial is paramount
Your first week at Imperial is key for your student experience. It’s the moment to meet roommates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and enroll in activities that capture your interest.
Even if you feel timid, endeavor to get involved. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during campus tours and society gatherings. Your inaugural week sets the precedent for your university experience.
Getting around London: travel wisely
In my initial week, I was baffled by the Tube and buses, which led me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but chaotic. Sidestep my error by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount to reduce Tube and bus fares.
Walking remains an excellent way to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Discover your comfort zones
London can be a lot to handle, especially at first. Identifying a comforting place is beneficial – my refuge is a local park where I go to unwind. The O2, merely 10 minutes away, is another venue where I relax with a film.
Find your own spots of comfort, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to recharge.
And remember to explore!
Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods around campus and your home. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred food or coffee locations.
Visit iconic sites, explore free museums, ride a double-decker bus for the views, and wander aimlessly. Some of your best adventures will stem from getting slightly lost!
Final recommendations before diving into Imperial student life
- Utilize a reusable bag – stores frequently charge for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas struggle against the wind.
- Engage in unique events – they foster memorable stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling at the beginning.
You aren’t expected to have everything sorted from day one. If you are reading this, you are already ahead of where I was when I started at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
