If you’re about to go through this, don’t fret. Here’s how to acclimate to London before beginning at Imperial, enabling you to enjoy the city as a newcomer.
Whether you arrive ahead of schedule or right before the term begins, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

To steer clear of pricey hotel expenses, arrange your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune. The top choices are claimed quickly, so strive to find a place close to your campus or along a convenient Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes.
Administrative Essentials: To-Do List
Once you’re in London, tackle these essentials without delay:
- Money Transfers – As an international student, discover a budget-friendly method to send money from your home country. Applications such as Wise or Revolut offer competitive rates.
- UK SIM Card – Acquire one right away to avoid being data-less in an unfamiliar area.
- Bank Account – Digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. You’ll require an account for transactions and payments from part-time jobs.
- Student ID Card – This is vital for accessing campus amenities, libraries, and student discounts. Secure it as soon as you can.
Your First Week at Imperial Matters
Your initial week is critical for your experience as a student. You’ll encounter flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Get involved during Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and join those that appeal to you.
Even if you tend to be reserved, challenge yourself to engage. I forged strong friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the foundation for your university adventure.
Travel Smart in London
At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across the city. It was an unforgettable experience, albeit chaotic. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced travel costs.
Walking remains the finest way to experience the city and its culture. You’ll uncover hidden treasures by meandering.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London can be emotionally taxing. Having a favorite spot can be beneficial – mine is the park near my home. I visit it daily to decompress. The O2 is another cherished location where I indulge in a movie weekly.
Discover your own comfort zones, whether at a cafe, bookstore, or riverbank bench. These locations are essential for unwinding.
Discover the City
Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and living area. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred eateries or coffee shops.
Tour iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the view. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from wandering a bit off the beaten path!
