Stepping into London for the first time, the city felt vast, noisy, brisk, and a tad intimidating. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I had a sense of disorientation. If you’re about to go through this, there’s no need to fret. Here are some pointers to help you acclimate to London before commencing your journey at Imperial, enabling you to relish the city as a newcomer.
Whether you’re arriving weeks in advance or just on the cusp of term, here’s the wisdom I wished I’d received upon my arrival.
First things first: secure accommodation
To steer clear of pricey hotel stays, organize your lodging ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is, since the prime choices get taken quickly. Aim for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for early classes.
Essential life admin: handling the necessary tasks
Once you’re in London, focus on these essentials:
- Financial management – as an international student, find a trustworthy, economical method for transferring money from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- Obtaining a UK SIM card – crucial for data access and navigation in a new locale or country. Acquire one soon after arriving.
- Establishing a bank account – some banks may ask for a UK address, but online banks such as Monzo or Starling are swift and cater to students. Open an account for everyday spending and part-time job salaries.
- Collecting your student ID – vital for entering campus buildings, utilizing libraries, and getting student discounts. Get it as soon as feasible.
Your initial week at Imperial is pivotal
Your first week at Imperial is essential for your student experience. It’s the time you’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Engage with Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and sign up for activities that pique your interest.
Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to join in. I did and forged close friendships during campus tours and society stalls. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.
Getting around London: travel wisely
<pDuring my initial week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses and walked nine kilometers across London to see the sights. It was chaotic but unforgettable. Instead, obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses.
Walking remains the best way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. You’ll uncover hidden treasures by simply wandering.
Identify your comfort zones
London can feel daunting, especially at first. Having a familiar spot is beneficial – mine is a local park where I go daily to unwind. My second place is the O2, just a 10-minute walk away, where I watch films weekly to de-stress.
Discover your own comfort zones, such as a cafe, a bookstore, or a riverside bench, to relax and rejuvenate. It’s more beneficial than you might anticipate.
And remember to explore!
Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Locate your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and favored food or coffee spots.
Visit iconic landmarks, check out free museums, ride a red double-decker bus for a panoramic view, and wander without a strict plan. Some of your most treasured memories will emerge from getting a bit lost!
Final pointers before diving into Imperial student life
- Carry a reusable bag – shops frequently charge for single-use bags.
- Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t very effective in strong winds.
- Participate in unique events – they often lead to great stories.
- Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – it’s a common initial experience.
You don’t need to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood when I began at Imperial – so take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
