Here’s how to acclimate to life in London prior to your time at Imperial, so you can fully appreciate your new city experience.

- Money Transfers: As an international student, choose a trustworthy method for transferring funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide more favorable rates.
- UK SIM Card: Acquire one promptly for mobile data and navigational assistance in your new environment.
- Bank Account: While some banks need a UK address, digital options like Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. Having an account is important for transactions and receiving part-time job payments.
- Student ID Card: This is essential for accessing campus amenities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to obtain it as soon as possible.
The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial
Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, try to engage; I forged strong friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society events. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.
Navigating London Wisely
In the beginning, I struggled with the Tube and bus systems, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. Prevent this by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for economical travel. Walking remains an excellent method to uncover and appreciate hidden treasures.
Look for Comfort Locations
London can feel intense, so it’s beneficial to discover a comfort area. Mine is a nearby park that I visit daily to unwind. The O2, merely a 10-minute stroll away, is another favored location for enjoying a movie. Seek out your own cozy spots, whether a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to recharge and refresh.
Discover the City
Acquaint yourself with your new environment around campus and your residence. Identify local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred dining options. Visit iconic sites, free museums, and relish the view from a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from spontaneous escapades.
