When I first arrived in London, the city appeared vast, noisy, fast-moving, and a touch intimidating. With only a suitcase in one hand and Google Maps in the other, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar circumstance, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimatize to your new life in London before you commence at Imperial, allowing you to genuinely appreciate the excitement of being new in the city.
Whether you arrive a few weeks ahead of time or just on the verge of the term starting, here’s the counsel I wish I had received upon my arrival.
Locate Accommodation
To avoid spending a fortune on hotels, secure your living arrangements early. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the prime choices are often snatched up quickly. Seek a location near campus or close to a dependable Tube line, as extended commutes can be challenging for early morning lectures.
Key Life Tasks
Upon reaching London, tackle these crucial tasks without delay:
- Money Transfers – As an international student, find a trustworthy and cost-effective method for sending money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut can assist in avoiding unfavorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM Card – Navigating without data can be tricky. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after you arrive.
- Bank Account – Some banks may require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and friendly to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID Card – This is essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Collect it as soon as possible.
The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial
Your initial week at Imperial is vital for your student experience. It’s the opportunity to connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and sign up for the ones that pique your interest.
Even if you are introverted, encourage yourself to engage. I did, and I made some of my closest friendships during random campus tours and society booths. Your first week establishes the framework for your university experience.
Navigate London Wisely
During my initial week, I had little understanding of the Tube or buses, so I walked nine kilometers across London to explore. It was chaotic but unforgettable—don’t repeat my mistake. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to enjoy cheaper travel on the Tube and buses.
Nevertheless, walking remains the best way to experience the city’s culture. You’ll uncover hidden treasures simply by meandering.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London can feel overwhelming at first. Having a familiar place can be comforting—mine is a local park where I go daily to unwind. My second favorite spot is the O2, located just 10 minutes away, where I watch films weekly to relax.
Identify your own favorite hangout like a café, bookstore, or riverside bench. These areas offer necessary respite and rejuvenation.
Discover the City
Familiarize yourself with the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred food or coffee spots.
Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for scenic views, and wander aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories will come from unintentionally getting lost!
Last-minute Tips Before Joining Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag – stores frequently charge for single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t very effective in strong winds.
- Attend unusual activities – they make for great stories.
- Don’t stress if you’re feeling disoriented – everyone feels that way at first.
You don’t have to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one red bus ride and one Tesco visit at a time.
