My arrival in London was, at first, a bit daunting due to its size, noise, and rapid pace. With nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps by my side, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re on the verge of this experience, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to your new life in London before commencing at Imperial, enabling you to make the most of your time in the city.
Regardless of whether you arrive early or just in time for term, here’s the counsel I wish I had received upon my arrival.
First things first: secure your living arrangements
Book your accommodation in advance to avoid costly hotel fees. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the best choices vanish quickly. Target a location close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to minimize long travels for those early classes.
Essential tasks: organizing the must-haves
As soon as you land in London, take care of these essentials right away:
- Money transfers – for international students, find a trustworthy and cost-effective method to move money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut can prevent unfavorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – make sure you have data for navigation in an unfamiliar locale. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after your arrival.
- Bank account – some banks may demand a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling offer quick and student-friendly services. Open an account to handle daily expenses and part-time job wages.
- Student ID card – this provides access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.
Your first week at Imperial is key
The initial week at Imperial is vital for your student adventure. It’s when you’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage in Welcome Week to connect with more than 350 student-led clubs and societies, and sign up for activities that pique your interest.
Even if shyness holds you back, strive to participate. I did, and made some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society exhibitions. Your first week lays the foundation for your university experience.
Discovering London: smart travel
In my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers to explore the city. It was memorable but chaotic—don’t replicate my mistake. Acquire your Student Oyster card and request the 18+ discount for cheaper Tube and bus fares.
Walking remains the best method to soak in the city and its culture. You’ll uncover hidden treasures by simply wandering.
Identify your comfort spots
London can feel emotionally intense, especially at first. A comforting location can be soothing—mine is a local park I visit daily to unwind. My second favorite is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I catch movies weekly to relax.
Seek out your personal spots, be it a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to recharge and reset. It’s often more beneficial than you realize.
And remember to explore!
Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent near your campus and home. Locate your local grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.
Visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, ride a red double-decker bus for the sights, and meander without a set plan. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from getting a little lost!
Final tips before you dive into Imperial student life
- Obtain a reusable bag – shops frequently charge for single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are inadequate in windy weather.
- Embrace unusual events – they provide fantastic stories.
- Don’t panic if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling at first.
You don’t have to have everything sorted out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial—so take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
