Upon my initial arrival in London, the vastness, noise, and intensity of the city were overwhelming. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, fret not. Here’s some guidance to help you adjust to London before your studies at Imperial commence, so you can take full advantage of all the city offers.
Whether you are coming early or right before the term starts, here’s the advice I wish had been given to me upon my arrival.
First things first: secure your accommodation
Prevent expensive hotel costs by sorting out a living arrangement in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone, as the best choices fill up fast. Try to find a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line, as lengthy travel times to morning lectures can be challenging.
Administrative tasks: tackling the essentials
Once settled in London, swiftly take care of these crucial items:
- Money transfer – as an overseas student, look for a trustworthy, cost-effective method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut can provide excellent exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – navigating a new environment is tough without data. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after you arrive.
- Bank account – while some banks may need a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and student-friendly. Establish an account for everyday expenses and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – crucial for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.
Your first week at Imperial is vital
The initial week at Imperial is key to your student experience. It’s when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and immerse yourself in your interests.
Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and I made some of my closest friends during campus tours and society stalls. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university journey.
Getting around London: travel wisely
During my first week, I was bewildered by the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Avoid my blunder. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for economical travel on the Tube and buses.
Walking remains the best way to experience the city and its culture. London has hidden treasures waiting to be uncovered as you explore.
Discover your comfortable spaces
London can be emotionally taxing, especially at the start. Having a comforting place aids – mine is a local park where I relax daily. Another is the O2, just a 10-minute stroll away, where I enjoy movies weekly.
Identify your own safe havens, be it a café, bookstore, or a riverside bench. These spots allow you to relax and reset.
Don’t forget to discover!
Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent around campus and your accommodation. Find your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee locations.
Explore notable landmarks, visit free museums, enjoy a ride on a red double-decker bus for the views, and wander aimlessly. Some of your best memories will come from a little misadventure!
Final pointers before diving into Imperial student life
- Grab a reusable bag – shops often charge for single-use options.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t very helpful in wind.
- Participate in unique events – they lead to great stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling at the start.
You don’t have to have everything figured out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
