With merely a suitcase and Google Maps as my compass, I found myself disoriented. If you’re about to start a similar adventure, don’t panic. Here’s some guidance to assist you in settling into your new life in London prior to commencing at Imperial, enabling you to savor the exciting experience of being a newcomer in the city.
Regardless of whether you arrive a few weeks in advance or just before the term starts, here’s the advice I wish I had been given upon my arrival.
Make finding accommodation a priority
Evade the steep expenses of hotel rooms by securing accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but others might not be, as the finest options get taken swiftly. Aim for a location near your campus or at least conveniently located near a dependable Tube line, as lengthy commutes can be tough for early morning classes.
Crucial life administrative tasks
Once you arrive in London, tackle these important tasks without delay:
- Money transfers – As an international student, seek a trustworthy and economical method to transfer funds from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut can assist you in dodging unfavorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – Ensure you have data for navigation by acquiring a UK SIM card promptly.
- Setting up a bank account – Some banks require a UK address, yet digital banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and cater well to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – This is vital for campus entry, utilizing libraries, and securing student discounts. Obtain it at the earliest opportunity.
Your first week at Imperial matters greatly
Your initial week at Imperial is essential for your student journey. It’s an opportunity to meet flatmates, classmates, and prospective friends. Engage with Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies, and sign up for activities that pique your interest.
Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and I made some of my closest friends during random campus tours and society events. Your first week establishes the mood for your university experience.
Smart travel in London
During my inaugural week, I misinterpreted the Tube and bus routes, resulting in a nine-kilometer hike across London. It was unforgettable but chaotic. Avoid my error by obtaining your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for economical travel on the Tube and buses.
Walking remains the most effective way to absorb the city’s culture and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify your comfort zones
London can be emotionally overwhelming, particularly at the start. Having a comfort zone helps – mine is the park near my home, where I retreat daily to unwind. The O2, just 10 minutes away, is another favorite for enjoying a movie.
Find your personal comfort zones, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or a riverside bench. These areas offer a much-needed reprieve in the bustling metropolis.
Explore and uncover
Acquaint yourself with frequently frequented spots around campus and your residence. Locate your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.
Visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, and relish a ride on a classic red double-decker bus. Some of your finest memories will be born from spontaneous escapades.
Final advice for starting your journey at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for disposable bags at stores.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket, as umbrellas are often inadequate against wind-driven rain.
- Agree to unconventional events – they typically lead to the most memorable stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented at first – it’s a common experience.
