Stepping into London for the first time was a breathtaking experience. The city seemed vast, bustling, and dynamic, making it hard for me to figure out my next steps with just a suitcase and Google Maps. If you’re ready to start a similar adventure, there’s no need for concern. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to London life before your studies at Imperial, enabling you to really appreciate your new urban experience.
Whether you’re arriving weeks ahead or just prior to the term, here’s the advice I wish I had upon my arrival.
First things first: find housing
To sidestep expensive hotel fees, arrange your accommodations promptly. I was lucky, but many aren’t, as the top choices are grabbed quickly. Try to locate a residence close to your campus or near a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for early classes.
Life administration: addressing the crucial necessities
After you arrive in London, focus on the following:
- Money transfers – International scholars need a dependable, budget-friendly method to send money from home. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide more favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – Navigating new surroundings without data can be tough. Get a UK SIM card and a data plan soon after your arrival.
- Bank account establishment – Some banks ask for a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and suitable for students. Open an account for everyday expenses and part-time job deposits.
- Student ID card – This allows entry to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.
The first week at Imperial is vital
Your initial week at Imperial is essential for your student journey. It’s the perfect time to meet your flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore more than 350 student-led clubs and societies and enroll in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you’re introverted, strive to engage. I did, and I made some of my closest friends during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week sets the tone for your university experience.
Getting around London: travel intelligently
During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or bus system, which led me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic but unforgettable. Don’t repeat my mistake—get a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses.
Walking remains an excellent way to experience the city and unearth hidden treasures.
Identify your cozy spots
London can be emotionally intense, especially at first. Having a favorite place to go is beneficial—mine is a nearby park where I unwind. My second spot is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I watch movies weekly.
Discover your own comfort zones, be it a café, bookstore, or riverside bench. These areas provide a chance to decompress and refresh.
And remember to discover!
Become acquainted with the areas you frequently visit around campus and your residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite food or coffee locations.
Explore iconic landmarks and the city during the weekends. Check out free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus, and wander without a specific plan. Some of your best memories will stem from those moments when you get a little lost!
Final pointers before diving into Imperial student life
- Utilize a reusable bag – stores often charge for single-use bags.
- Get a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t stand up to the wind.
- Participate in unique events – they provide great anecdotes.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s typical at the start.
You don’t have to have everything figured out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London story one bus ride and Tesco shopping trip at a time.
