Stepping foot in London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared enormous, vibrant, and undeniably energetic. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I was clueless about how to start. If you’re about to undergo this experience, fear not. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to London prior to commencing at Imperial, ensuring you can relish your new life in the city to the fullest.
Whether you show up weeks in advance or right as the term begins, here’s the advice I wish I’d received upon my arrival.
First things first: secure your accommodation
Book your housing early to evade expensive hotel bills. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the prime accommodations vanish rapidly. Strive for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to sidestep lengthy commutes for morning classes.
Administrative tasks: settling the necessary matters
Upon arriving in London, focus on completing these essential tasks:
- Financial management – International students require an economical option for sending money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- Obtaining a UK SIM card – Important for navigation and staying in touch in a new city. Get one soon after you arrive.
- Establishing a bank account – Some banks may require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and friendly to students. A bank account is crucial for daily purchases and payments from part-time work.
- Acquiring your student ID card – This allows access to campus facilities, the library, and student discounts. Secure it as soon as possible.
Your first week at Imperial sets the stage
The initial week at Imperial is pivotal for shaping your student experience. It’s the time to connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Immerse yourself in Welcome Week to discover more than 350 student-led clubs and societies and register for activities that pique your interest.
Even if you are reserved, encourage yourself to get involved. I formed friendships with some of my closest companions during campus tours and society booths. This week lays the groundwork for your university journey.
Getting around London: travel wisely
In my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable but chaotic experience. Avoid my blunder by acquiring your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel.
Walking remains a fantastic method to discover the city and uncover its hidden treasures.
Identify your comfort zones
London can feel emotionally intense, particularly at the beginning. Having a comforting place to retreat to is beneficial – mine is a nearby park I visit daily to unwind. Another is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I enjoy watching movies weekly.
Discover your own spots, whether a café, bookstore, or bench by the river, to relax and refresh.
And remember to explore!
Acquaint yourself with areas surrounding your campus and residence. Identify the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your preferred dining or coffee venues.
Visit iconic landmarks, check out free museums, ride a classic red double-decker bus, and roam without a plan. Some of your fondest memories will be formed by getting a little lost!
Final pointers prior to diving into student life at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag – stores frequently charge for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas won’t suffice in windy weather.
- Accept invitations to unusual events – they lead to great stories.
- Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling early on.
You don’t have to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I commenced my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
