Stepping into London was initially quite a lot for me. The city appeared enormous, bustling, and relentless. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt adrift. If you’re about to embark on this journey, stay calm. Here’s how to familiarize yourself with London before your time at Imperial begins, allowing you to embrace your new city life.

Whether you’re arriving weeks in advance or just before classes start, here’s the guidance I wish I’d received.

Prioritize Finding Accommodation

To avoid costly hotels, make sure to book accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but many aren’t since the most desirable options fill up fast. Target somewhere close to campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long travel times for early morning lectures.

Handle Essential Life Administrative Tasks

After arriving in London, promptly take care of these essentials:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, seek a budget-friendly method to transfer funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – crucial for data access and navigation. Obtain one right after your arrival.
  • Bank account – some banks may ask for a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Establish one for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
  • Student ID card – vital for entering campus buildings, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Acquire it as soon as you can.

Maximize Your First Week at Imperial

Your initial week is crucial for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I forged lasting friendships during spontaneous tours and society stands. This week will establish the foundation for your university experience.

Travel Wisely in London

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, opting to walk nine kilometers to explore. It was memorable but quite hectic. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for economical travel. Nonetheless, walking is still a fantastic way to uncover the city’s hidden gems.

Identify Your Comfortable Spaces

London can be emotionally taxing. Having a comfort zone is beneficial – mine is a local park where I relax daily. My second favorite place is the O2, where I catch movies weekly. Discover your own spots, such as a cafe or bookstore, to rejuvenate.

Discover the City

Get acquainted with areas surrounding campus and home. Find your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining spots. Explore iconic landmarks, complimentary museums, and take a ride on a double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will be made through aimless exploration.

Concluding Advice for Starting at Imperial

  • Carry a reusable bag – stores charge for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas won’t stand up to windy weather.
  • Join unusual events – they create wonderful stories.
  • Don’t fret if you feel a bit lost – it’s completely normal initially.

You don’t need to have every detail sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure, one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.
