Arriving in London for the first time was a lot to take in. The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling. With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar situation soon, don’t stress. Here’s how to acclimatize to London before commencing at Imperial, enabling you to enjoy your new life in the city.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or right before term starts, here’s the advice I wish I had received.

Locate accommodation

Arrange your lodging early to avoid costly hotel costs. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune. The top options disappear quickly! Try to find a spot close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to sidestep lengthy commutes for morning classes.

Life administration: key necessities to handle

Upon reaching London, take care of these vital items:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, find a dependable, cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Applications such as Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – obtain one swiftly to access data and navigation in your new environment.
  • Bank account – certain banks require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time income.
  • Student ID card – vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Retrieve it promptly.

The significance of your inaugural week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is vital. It’s when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Dive into Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you tend to be reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I did, and I formed close friendships during campus tours and society fairs. Your initial week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Traversing London: travel wisely

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses and walked nine kilometers through London. It was unforgettable but hectic. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus fares.

Walking remains an excellent way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. You’ll stumble upon hidden treasures by exploring on foot.

Identify your relaxation spaces

London can be emotionally intense, particularly at first. Having a go-to spot can provide comfort – mine is a local park I visit daily to unwind. The O2, just a short 10-minute distance, is another favorite for weekly movie nights.

Discover your own hideaways, like a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to recharge and refresh.

Discover the city!

Familiarize yourself with your new surroundings near campus and home. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee spots.

Explore renowned landmarks, visit free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus for scenic views. Some of your most cherished memories will originate from getting a little lost!

Final advice before immersing into Imperial life

  • Use a reusable bag – stores charge for single-use bags.
  • Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t fare well in windy conditions.
  • Participate in unique events – they create excellent stories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – everyone goes through that initially.

It’s okay not to have everything sorted by day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
