Stepping foot in London for the first time was quite daunting. The city appeared massive, noisy, and bustling. With nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you’re on the verge of this experience, take heart. Here are some tips to ease your transition into London prior to commencing at Imperial, enabling you to relish the city.

No matter if you arrive weeks in advance or just before the semester kicks off, here’s what I wish I had known on my initial arrival.

First things first: secure your accommodation

Steer clear of costly hotel bookings by organizing your housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the best choices vanish quickly. Strive to stay close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long travel times for early classes.

Administrative tasks: addressing key necessities

Once you’re in London, take care of these critical tasks:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, seek an economical method to transfer funds. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – connectivity is essential for navigation. Acquire a UK SIM card and data package soon after your arrival.
  • Bank account – some banks may ask for a UK address, yet digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. Open an account for daily expenses and part-time job income.
  • Student ID card – this permits access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Ensure you collect it without delay.

The initial week at Imperial carries great significance

Your opening week at Imperial is vital. It’s when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and participate in activities that intrigue you.

Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I did and formed close friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week sets the foundation for your university journey.

Getting around London: travel wisely

In my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, so I ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains the superior way to appreciate the city and its culture. You’ll uncover hidden treasures by exploring on foot.

Identify your comfort zones

London can feel overwhelming. Having a place of comfort is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I retreat to unwind. The O2, merely 10 minutes away, is another location where I relax by watching films.

Discover your own comfort zones, such as a café, bookstore, or a peaceful riverside bench, to recharge and find serenity.

And remember to discover!

Familiarize yourself with your frequently visited spots around campus and your residence. Identify local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred dining places.

Visit iconic landmarks, explore complimentary museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and wander aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will result from getting a tad lost!

Final pieces of advice before immersing into Imperial student life

  • Carry a reusable bag – stores often impose charges for single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas offer little protection in gusty conditions.
  • Participate in ‘unique’ events – they make for fantastic stories.
  • Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – everyone experiences it initially.

You don’t have to figure everything out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was upon starting at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
