Arriving in London for the first time was a truly overwhelming experience. The city felt immense, noisy, and bustling. With just a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself uncertain about where to start. If you are about to undertake a similar adventure, do not fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in settling into your new life in London prior to commencing at Imperial, allowing you to fully appreciate the city.

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks ahead or just before the term kicks off, here is the advice I wish I had when I arrived.

Secure Accommodation First

Minimize the expensive cost of hotels by arranging your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the best choices are swiftly snatched up. Strive to find a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to steer clear of lengthy commutes for morning lectures.

Vital Life Administration

Upon reaching London, prioritize these tasks:

  • Currency Transfers – As an international student, discover a trustworthy and budget-friendly way to transfer funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide competitive rates.
  • UK SIM Card – Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan right away to navigate the city conveniently.
  • Bank Account Opening – Some banks require a UK address, but online banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-oriented. Open an account for daily purchases and part-time job wages.
  • Student ID Card – This card allows access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it as soon as you can.

Significance of the First Week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is essential. It’s the opportunity to meet roommates, fellow students, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week events to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and engage in activities that captivate your interest.

Even if you’re shy, try to get involved. I did, and I met some of my closest friends through campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the vibe for your university experience.

Smart Commuting in London

During my first week, I struggled with the Tube and buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Avoid my misstep by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount to travel economically.

Walking remains a fantastic means to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can feel emotionally taxing at first. Having a place of comfort is beneficial. For me, it’s the park near my residence, where I visit daily to unwind. Another is the O2, a mere 10 minutes away, where I relax with a movie weekly.

Find your own comfort spots, be it a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to refresh and reset.

Discover the City

Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your favorite food or coffee locations.

Explore famous landmarks, check out free museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and wander aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories will arise from getting a little lost.

Final Insights for Starting at Imperial

  • Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof coat as umbrellas do not work well in windy weather.
  • Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.
  • Don’t worry if you feel disoriented at first; it’s a shared experience.

You don’t need to have everything resolved on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
