Making my way to London for the very first time was a truly intense experience. The city appeared vast, noisy, and full of energy. Armed with nothing more than a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt somewhat adrift. If you’re bracing yourself for this moment, don’t fret. Here are some tips to assist you in acclimating to life in London prior to your arrival at Imperial, ensuring you can relish the city.
Whether you are arriving early or just before the semester begins, here’s what I wish I had been aware of when I first landed.
Secure Accommodation
Book your accommodation as soon as possible to prevent costly hotel expenses. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The top choices fill up rapidly, so aim to find a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to steer clear of lengthy commutes for morning lectures.
Essential Administrative Tasks
Upon your arrival in London, tackle these vital tasks without delay:
- Money transfers – if you’re an international student, identify a dependable method for transferring funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.
- UK SIM card – obtain one promptly to have data and navigation capabilities in your new environment.
- Bank account – establish a bank account soon for handling transactions and receiving payments from part-time work. Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students.
- Student ID card – obtain it early to gain access to campus amenities, libraries, and student discounts.
The Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial
Your first week at Imperial is vital. It’s the time when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week activities, discover clubs and societies, and engage in what piques your interest.
Even if you’re a bit reserved, challenge yourself to take part. I formed bonds with some of my closest friends during campus tours and society gatherings. This week lays the foundation for your university journey.
Travel Wisely in London
In my initial week, I covered nine kilometers across London because of my confusion regarding the Tube and buses. Don’t replicate my oversight. Get a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable transport.
Walking remains an excellent way to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify Your Relaxation Areas
London can feel quite daunting, particularly in the beginning. Having a go-to spot can be beneficial. Mine is a local park where I go to unwind. Another favorite is the O2, just a 10-minute walk away, where I enjoy watching movies weekly to decompress.
Discover your own places, be it a cafe, bookstore, or a bench by the riverside, to unwind and recharge.
Discover the City
Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods around your campus and residence. Locate local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred food or coffee establishments.
Visit renowned landmarks, tour museums, ride a double-decker bus, and meander without a specific plan. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from getting a bit lost.
Final Recommendations Before You Start at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag – stores impose charges for single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can be ineffective during windy conditions.
- Participate in unique events – they result in wonderful stories.
- Don’t panic if you feel disoriented – it’s entirely normal at first.
You don’t have to have everything sorted out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
