Stepping foot in London for the very first time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared vast, bustling, and frenetic. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt a bit lost on how to start. If you’re gearing up for this experience, don’t be concerned. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to London before your journey at Imperial begins, so you can thrive in your new urban life.
Whether you are arriving weeks in advance or just days before classes, here is the advice I wish had been shared with me upon my arrival.
Secure Your Accommodation
To bypass pricey hotel rates, arrange your housing well ahead of time. I got lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone, as the prime spots are taken quickly. Strive to find a place close to campus or near a dependable Tube line to minimize commute times for those early lectures.
Administrative Essentials
Take care of these necessary items shortly after arriving in London:
- Money transfers – as an international student, find a trustworthy method for transferring funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – vital for access to data and navigation in an unfamiliar city. Ensure you obtain a UK SIM card and data plan without delay.
- Bank account – many banks require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Open an account for everyday transactions and for receiving part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it at your earliest convenience.
Your First Week at Imperial Matters
Your inaugural week at Imperial is significant. It’s when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you tend to be shy, challenge yourself to join in; I made lasting friendships through campus tours and society stalls. This week lays the groundwork for your university experience.
Traveling Around London: Smart Tips
During my first week, I found myself walking nine kilometers around London due to a mix-up with the Tube and buses. To avoid this, get a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking, however, remains an excellent way to explore and uncover hidden treasures throughout the city.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London can feel daunting, especially at the start. Having a familiar place to retreat to is beneficial – mine is a nearby park I visit each day to unwind. Another is the O2, just a 10-minute stroll away, where I catch a movie every week. Discover your own comfortable venues, like a café or bookstore, to rejuvenate and reset.
Get Out and Explore!
Familiarize yourself with the areas you will frequent around campus and your residence. Locate local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to food or coffee stops. Tour iconic sights, visit free museums, ride a double-decker bus, and meander with no specific agenda. Some of your most cherished memories will come from those moments of getting a little off track!
Final Suggestions Before Starting at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag – shops frequently charge for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t very effective against winds.
- Participate in unique events – they generate great stories.
- Do not stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a normal feeling at first.
You don’t have to have everything figured out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began my journey at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.
