Ten months prior, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and doubt regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Reflecting now, I recognize an academic year brimming with personal growth, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I stand today?
One of the initial and most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating facets of beginning university, and for those of you considering this journey, it may be among your top concerns. On my first day moving into my place, a few days ahead of the semester starting, I spent a whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and greet anyone. However, sitting here today, I can affirm that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever known, right here at this university and within this program. I have cultivated a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in small conversations with individuals facing similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I discovered that it’s always advantageous to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, fret not! Numerous ice-breaker chances and events will be available to help you connect with others. I also learned that if you can be one thing, it should be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you are sure to encounter people who resonate with you.
Another obstacle I needed to navigate was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some ways, an even greater one from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be tough on your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me cope with that feeling, one of them being the realization that everyone is experiencing similar situations. If a concept eludes you, I can nearly assure you that there are at least a handful of others who are also struggling. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students face hurdles. They express empathy towards students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had acted on it sooner. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to get to know the staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect is to capitalize on the assistance being provided to you. You can never receive too much!
Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both leading up to and during university, are generally unfounded and can be alleviated by the myriad of support options available from both staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
