Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was just about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was familiar with. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a time marked by personal development, challenges, and fulfillment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect is often one of the most daunting when commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a significant worry. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, merely days before classes started, I spent the entire day inside my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with brief chats with those in similar circumstances. So, what did I uncover? I discovered that taking a chance at the year’s onset is essential. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to facilitate connections with others. I also recognized that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse array of individuals within the course and university, you are sure to encounter people with similar interests.

Another obstacle was grasping the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was indeed a leap from A-levels, and even more so from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can take a toll on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. What helped me was the reminder that everyone faces the same challenges. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely that others are struggling as well. So, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp during your first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!

This naturally brings me to my next point. The staff in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They connect with us and maintain regular communication regarding our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned previously about stepping outside my comfort zone – I did so by taking on the role of a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster relationships with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to engage with the faculty, and it stands as one of the best actions you can take for your benefit! My primary takeaway is to capitalize on the support provided. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the support available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never solitary and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
