Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously timid self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what have I discovered, and what is my current state?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most challenging elements of entering university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into residence, right before the term commenced, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, nonetheless, I can proudly say I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it all kicked off with light conversation with others in similar situations. What have I learned? It’s beneficial to take a plunge at the onset of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with others. Also, be authentic. With an array of diverse individuals at the university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even more substantial jump from the first to the second term. Being in such an atmosphere can impact your confidence; you might observe others studying and question your capabilities. What assisted me was recalling that everyone is navigating the same circumstances. If you don’t grasp something, it’s likely that others don’t either. So, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson during the first year. Reach out to peers and staff!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students face. They keep in communication with us throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the finest things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway is to capitalize on the support available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated by the support provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never alone and how to relish my experience despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
