Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was preparing to start my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a new student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I realize I have experienced a year rich in personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This certainly stands out as one of the more frightening elements of beginning university, and if you are reading this as a future student, it may be one of your top worries. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, as I sit here today, I can affirm that I have made some of the finest friends I’ve ever known, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that making a bold move at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities to help you connect with people. I also discovered that if you can embody one trait, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded people.
A further challenge was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can be tough on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insignificant. Several factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the awareness that everyone shares the same struggles. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that others are in the same predicament. So, seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and acknowledge that students face challenges. They show understanding and maintain continuous communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking bold steps earlier – I made one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is extremely valuable. There are numerous methods to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to seize the opportunities for support that you are given. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated through the numerous support options available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never isolated, and it has demonstrated how to have fun despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
