Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Exploring the unknown wasn’t something my previously introverted and reserved self was accustomed to. Upon reflection, I now recognize a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant concern for you. On my first day of settling into my accommodation, just prior to the start of the term, I spent all day in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself. Today, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar positions. What did I glean? It’s best to take a leap at the onset of the year. If you’re not prepared or comfortable, don’t stress! There are numerous ice-breaking activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that being authentic is essential. With so many diverse individuals around the course and university, you’re sure to find kindred spirits.
Another hurdle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a significant uptick from A-levels, particularly from the first term to the second. Being in such a demanding environment can challenge your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel like you’re not measuring up. What aided me was the realization that everyone is in a similar situation. If you’re struggling with something, chances are others are too. So, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson of the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from classmates and staff!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and keep in constant touch with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully make use of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty, which is incredibly valuable. There are many avenues to connect with the staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway is to fully utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the support available from both staff and students. I’ve discovered that I’m never alone and how to have fun despite stress factors like exams and deadlines.
