Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most daunting hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you are a potential student reading this, it might be among your main worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, mere days ahead of the semester starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too nervous to venture out and meet others. However, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was initiating small conversations with individuals in similar positions. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s essential to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, just be yourself. With a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded individuals.

Another challenge I navigated was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was distinctly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being plunged into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel underwhelmed. A few strategies helped me manage that sensation, one being the assurance that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you struggle with something, I can nearly guarantee that others are also grappling with the same issues. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the single most vital lesson to absorb in the first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty for help!

This leads me to my following point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t make use of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I previously noted taking risks – I took a significant one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to establish connections with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to get acquainted with staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance you’re offered. You can never have too much support!

In conclusion, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support systems available from staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I’m never truly alone, and it has taught me how to find joy even amidst challenges like exams and deadlines.
