Ten months earlier, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the foremost and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking parts of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a significant worry. On my first day of moving into my dormitory, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet anyone. Now, I can assert with confidence that I have established some of the most wonderful friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I understand? I realized that taking a chance at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also recognized that if you can embody one quality, be authentic. With such a diverse group of individuals within the course and university, you’re sure to encounter others who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the volume of work and the challenge of the material. There was unmistakably a leap from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even more considerable leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting isn’t always beneficial for your self-esteem; you might observe peers studying and feel inadequate. A few factors assisted me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that many others don’t grasp it either. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek support from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The personnel in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students often face difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us concerning our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s unquestionably one of the most advantageous steps you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to fully utilize the support available. You can never have an excess of assistance!
In summary, this year has illustrated to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and throughout university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the various support systems in place from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even when faced with pressures such as exams and deadlines.
