Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about the path ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unknown was not something my once timid self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was the process of making friends. This is often one of the most daunting facets of beginning university, and if you’re considering this path, it could be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, just days before the term started, I spent the whole day in my room, feeling too daunted to go out and socialize. Today, I can proudly claim that I’ve formed some of the most amazing friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with those in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? It’s essential to take a leap of faith at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking activities to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that authenticity is crucial. With such a variety of individuals at the university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another difficulty was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a marked increase from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first to second term. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was the reminder that everyone shares the same struggle. If you don’t grasp something, it’s likely that others do not either. So, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson in the first year. Reach out to peers and staff!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand the struggles students encounter. They show empathy and keep open lines of communication throughout the year. I did not fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to engage with staff members, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to get to know faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the available assistance. You can never have too much!
All in all, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the support accessible from both staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never alone and has taught me how to find joy even amid stressors like examinations and deadlines.
