Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the foremost and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it could be one of your major worries. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room because I was too shy to step out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assert that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in small conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to help you connect with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, be genuine. With such a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who share similar traits with you.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even more significant shift from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such a setting may not always boost your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me through those feelings, one being the reassurance that everyone is in the same situation. If you encounter difficulties understanding something, I can almost assure you that there are at least a handful of others who also find it challenging. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Seek help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for you to succeed and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to students and keep consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps at the start; I took one by becoming a year wellness representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to seize the opportunities for assistance that are being offered to you. You can never have too much support!

Overall, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are almost always unfounded and can be mitigated through the numerous support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never alone, and it’s shown me how to enjoy myself while managing stressors like exams and deadlines.
