Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back, I can observe a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is typically one of the most frightening elements of starting university, and for any prospective students out there, it might be a major worry. On my first day moving into my residence, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too daunted to step out and meet new people. Now, however, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most cherished friendships I’ve ever known at this institution and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all began with a few casual conversations with peers in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I concluded that it’s always a good idea to take a plunge at the year’s start. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events to aid in bonding with others. I also realized that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. There’s a diverse range of individuals in the program and at the university; you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the academic load and complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger shift from the first semester to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always easy on your self-esteem; you might observe fellow students engaged in study and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate those feelings, one being the reassurance that everyone shares the same experience. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you there are several others who also struggle. So, seek assistance. This may well be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Request help from fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in the Materials department are fantastic. They truly wish for your success and recognize that students encounter challenges. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really tap into the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had started earlier. I alluded to taking leaps before – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best steps you can take for yourself! My primary insight from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance provided to you. You can never receive too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never alone and illustrated how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
