Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the brink of starting my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and an abundance of enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide, and what is my current perspective?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is typically one of the most daunting facets of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I proudly acknowledge that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all beginning with a few casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that making a bold move at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel entirely ready or at ease, there’s no need to panic! There will be plenty of ice-breaking activities to help you engage with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse array of people in the program and university, you’re sure to find others who share your mindset.
Another aspect that posed a challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in many ways, an even greater jump from the first to the second term. Being placed in such an environment can be tough on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few elements assisted me in overcoming this sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If something is unclear to you, you can be almost certain that others are facing the same difficulty. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the hurdles students encounter. They relate to us and keep in touch consistently throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had discovered it sooner. I previously mentioned taking risks—at the beginning of the year, I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly valuable. There are multiple avenues to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your benefit! My primary lesson from this dimension of university life is to utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated through the various support resources accessible from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy amidst stressors like examinations and deadlines.
