Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Dipping into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Reflecting on this past academic year, I see a period filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what has this year imparted to me, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most stressful obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more intimidating aspects of commencing university, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day remaining in my room because I felt too apprehensive to venture out and greet others. However, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I have made some of the finest friends I’ve ever known, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was a bit of casual conversation with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take that leap at the onset of the year. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that above all, you should be true to yourself. The course and university are filled with diverse individuals; you’re sure to find people who resonate with you.

Another challenge I had to tackle was the demands of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few elements aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same struggle. If something seems unclear, I can almost assure you there are several others grappling with it as well. Thus, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek assistance from both your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my following point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for you to succeed and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly invaluable. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the support you’re offered. You can never have too much!

In general, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both in anticipation of and during university, are almost always irrational and can be eased with the array of support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
