Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was far from what my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyable moments! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was establishing friendships. This certainly ranks among the more daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too scared to venture out and introduce myself to others. Yet, sitting here today, I can assertively say that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever encountered at this university and in this program. I’ve built a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I come to realize? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always fruitful. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be ample ice-breaker events and opportunities to help you connect with others. I also came to understand that if you can embody one quality, it should be authenticity. There is such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university; you’re certain to find kindred spirits.
Another challenge was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a significant leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such a setting doesn’t always bolster your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few factors helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you’re struggling with something, I can nearly assure you that there are others who are equally bewildered. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek support from both your peers and the faculty!
This brings me to my next topic. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They show understanding towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I noted earlier about taking chances – I did make one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many avenues to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to leverage the resources available to you. You can never have an excess of support!
On a broader note, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be eased by the numerous support options offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone, and it has illustrated how to enjoy myself while navigating stressors such as exams and deadlines.
